For those wanting to parent, adoption can be a first choice, a second choice by default or a last option when other measures have been either unsuccessful or undesired. For many individuals and couples who have experienced rounds of fertility treatments, they arrive at the adoption option when they are physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially spent. As with other options for family building, the couple may be in agreement that this is their next step or one partner may be for adoption and the other either on the fence or against the choice. Like with assisted reproductive treatments, adoption offers a variety of choices and decisions to make.
Some issues to consider include whether you and/or your partner want:
- Domestic or international adoption
- Agency or private attorney adoption
- Open, partially-open or closed adoption
- One child or multiple children
- Age of child or children
- Race/culture of child or children
We can help you and/or your partner decide if adoption is right for you. We can provide emotional support and counseling to help guide you in your journey to become a parent through adoption. We provide a safe, neutral space to work through both decisions about what kind of adoption to pursue as well as through any difficult feelings which may persist or re-emerge at this stage in the process.
For individuals and couples ready to pursue adoption, we provide counseling on pre and post-adoptive issues as well as support during “the wait” either for the birth of a child in the U.S. or news that you will become a parent or parents of a child born abroad.
